Why warranty terms are so important

A home battery is an investment of thousands of euros that should last 15–25 years. The warranty terms determine your security if something goes wrong. Yet only a minority of buyers understand what the warranty actually covers — and what it does not.

Two concepts are crucial: the year warranty (maximum duration, e.g. 10 years) and the cycle warranty (maximum charge cycles, e.g. 6,000). The warranty applies until the first criterion is reached. Your daily usage determines which limit is reached first.

The year warranty is straightforward: the battery is covered for X years from the date of purchase. However, most manufacturers attach conditions, such as mandatory installation by a certified installer or product registration within 30 days.

Cycle warranty: usage as the benchmark

A charge cycle is one complete charge-discharge cycle (from 0% to 100% and back). A battery that is fully used daily consumes 365 cycles per year. With a 6,000-cycle warranty, that is theoretically 16.4 years. But the 10-year warranty expires sooner — so the cycle warranty only comes into play if you complete more than one full cycle per day.

Read the notes in the warranty documents. Many manufacturers state that if capacity loss exceeds a certain percentage (e.g. more than 30% below nominal capacity), the warranty has been triggered — but this must be demonstrable via the monitoring app.

Most warranties do NOT cover:

• Damage from incorrect installation — always have it carried out by a certified installer
• Damage from power surges or lightning strikes — standard surge protection is recommended
• Normal capacity degradation — a slight decline in capacity is expected and normal
• Damage from use outside environmental specifications — e.g. installation in a space that is too hot or too humid
• Cosmetic damage — scratches, dents and paint damage are generally not covered

How do you keep your warranty valid?

Your warranty remains valid if you:

• Register the product with the manufacturer (sometimes required for full warranty)
• Install annual firmware updates to keep the system up to date
• Use the battery within the recommended charge/discharge levels (typically 20–90% SoC)
• Carry out maintenance according to the prescribed schedule in the user manual
