Everything about degradazione della batteria, cycles, calendar ageing and the difference between LFP and NMC. Plus practical tips to make your batteria last longer.
The lifespan of a batteria domestica is one of the most important factors in your purchasing decision. The good news: modern batterie LFP last 15 to 25+ years. That's longer than most nucleo familiare elettrodomestici and comparable to the lifespan of pannelli solari.
But what exactly does lifespan mean for a batteria? A batteria doesn't simply stop working one day. The capacità gradually decreases over the years — this is called degradation. In this article, we explain how degradation works, which factors contribute to it, and how you can maximise the lifespan.
Batteria degradation is the gradual loss of storage capacità over time. A 10 kWh batteria may only have 8 kWh of available capacità after 10 years. There are two main forms of degradation:
Every time your batteria charges and discharges (a cycle), it loses a tiny amount of capacità. An batteria LFP is good for 6,000 to 10,000+ cycles before capacità drops to 80%. With daily use (1 cycle al giorno), this means 16-27 years. With more intensive use (2 cycles al giorno, e.g. with tariffe dinamiche), this works out to 8-14 years.
In addition to cycles, a batteria also loses capacità simply through time. Even if you don't use the batteria, chemical degradation takes place. For batterie LFP, calendar ageing is minimal: less than 2% all'anno at normal temperatures. For batterie NMC, this is higher: 3-5% all'anno.

The type of chimica della batteria has a major impact on lifespan:
| Proprietà | LFP | NMC | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cicli fino all'80% | 6,000-10,000+ | 3,000-5,000 | LFP 2x better |
| Calendar ageing | <2% all'anno | 3-5% all'anno | LFP significativamente better |
| Capacità after 10 years | 80-90% | 60-75% | LFP retains more |
This is one of the most important reasons why HES esclusivamente sells batterie LFP. The longer lifespan translates directly into lower costs per kWh over the total lifespan.
The following factors influence how long your batteria lasts:
Although modern batterie domestiche require little manutenzione, you can maximise the lifespan with these tips:
Lo sapevate?
An LFP batteria domestica that does 1 cycle daily still has 80%+ of its original capacità after 15 years. After 20 years, that's still 70-75%. The batteria doesn't stop working — it simply stores gradually less.
Most produttori offer warranties that reflect the lifespan. Anker SOLIX provides 10-15 years garanzia with a minimum of 70% capacità. Dyness and Pylontech offer 10 years with a minimum of 60% capacità. These are conservative warranties — in pratica, the batterie often perform better.
After the garanzia period expires, the batteria simply continues to work. The only difference is that you can no longer claim from the produttore if the capacità drops below the garanzia threshold.
Modern LFP batterie domestiche have an impressive lifespan of 15-25+ years. With minimal manutenzione and proper placement, you get the most out of your investment. The total cost per stored kWh decreases with every additional year your batteria lasts.
