Your contatore intelligente is the nerve centre of your energy nucleo familiare. By connecting it to your batteria domestica, you unlock automatic optimisation and real-time insights.
Nei Paesi Bassi, over 90% of nuclei familiari now have a contatore intelligente. What many people don't realise is that this meter can do much more than just measure consumption. Via the porta P1, the contatore intelligente transmits detailed consumption data every second — live power in and out, per phase, including feed-in. Anyone who connects this data to their batteria domestica has the foundation for truly smart gestione energetica.
In this article, we explain how the P1 connection works, what you need for it, which batterie domestiche support it, and what the benefits are in pratica.
The porta P1 is a standardised data output on Dutch contatore intelligentes. The following data is transmitted every second:
There are two commonly used methods to integrate the contatore intelligente with your batteria domestica:

Many modern sistema di batterie domestiches have a built-in P1 reader or an optional gateway that connects directly to the porta P1. The batteria uses this data to dynamically optimise charging and discharging:
If you have a Home Assistant, Homey, or similar platform, you can convert the P1 data into universal signals that can control praticamente any batteria. This offers maximum flexibility but requires technical knowledge:
The added value of a connected contatore intelligente lies in the automatic decisions the batteria makes independently based on real-time data:
Without a P1 connection, a batteria domestica operates on a fixed schedule: charge in the morning, discharge in the evening. With P1 data, this becomes dynamic: the batteria only charges when there is surplus (energia solare), discharges as soon as grid consumption threatens to rise, and always takes the current price into account with contratto dinamicos. In pratica, this leads to 5-15% higher autoconsumo compared to a system without contatore intelligente control.
Want to connect your contatore intelligente to your batteria domestica? Follow this step-by-step plan:
1. Check whether your contatore intelligente has an accessible porta P1 (RJ11 connector, orange flap). 2. Check whether your sistema di batterie domestiche supports P1 connection (see manual or contact HES). 3. Install the supplied gateway or order the correct P1 cable. 4. Connect the gateway to the porta P1 and link it to your home network (WiFi or ethernet). 5. Add the gateway in your batteria domestica's app. 6. Activate the 'contatore intelligente control' or 'grid balancing' mode. 7. Check via the consumption report after one week whether the optimisation is working.
